“It seems to me that, like any form of dialogue, animal communication is a two way street. Not only is Jeanne sensitive to my dogs’ and horses’ thoughts and feeling, she’s also adept at giving them information that contributes to their understanding of human behavior. When my brother recently came to stay with me, Mufasa, a cairn-pug hybrid I adopted from a local shelter almost two years ago, was clearly less than enchanted with the change. Mufasa is a sweet little dog, but he’s also spoiled and opinionated; he very much resented my brother’s attempts at discipline. (When Jeanne asked, “So what do you think of Michael,” Fasa’s immediate response was, “Not much.”) She let him complain for awhile (“I am what I am”), and then explained to him that Michael needed a new place to live, just as Fasa himself had needed one not that long ago. That clearly struck home and Fasa has since shown himself to be more accepting of my brother, even occasionally going so far as to actually obey him when Michael orders him off the table. (Sigh.)”
